It’s finally settled in—today, is the first day of the rest of my life. Even though we bitch through school and complain about all the studying and exams—at least the majority of the days, we just had class from 8am to noon, then we were out…free to go. Now, I’m really going to miss my afternoons where I could study in my athletic clothes, sitting Indian style in my computer chair and blaring music whenever I needed a power boost. I will miss heading to the kitchen to make a gourmet recipe when I needed a mind-break. Now, the rest of my days, I will be in the air condition, in a quiet setting, in my business clothes, with only the petty rhetoric of the break room conversations during lunch. I feel today is the first real day of my adult life. I feel like the glory days of summer vacations are long gone and possibly the best days have passed—as far as shenanigans of college years are concerned when school really wasn’t “hard” and the pleasures far outweighed the sacrifice. Where I had the luxury of playing a game I love, with the team I loved, and my family near me all the time watching my games. And yet, as I put down these words on paper, it is the feeling of nostalgia that has overtaken me. Yearning to hang onto my youth and fighting to deny the inevitable…it just may be time to be serious? And, gasp, grow up? Who says you really have to grow up anyway? But in a career such as pharmacy, that requires perfection, intellectual decision-making, how can one really take it all that lightly? And because my thoughts for the most part are in song, I can’t help but get the song “Everybody’s working for the weekend” out of my head! OMG!
But I am happy. So happy and feeling accomplished that I decided to start this journal. It is indeed an exciting time and a time of change. Changing from the last seven years of my life in college to the “real” world experience. Today, I got my first true clinical experience. I worked on my patient’s case in the morning and then actually got to meet him during his appointment in the afternoon. Sounds simple, really, but it was my 1st time. I think there are going to be a lot of firsts in the years to come—and that’s exciting. I’ve been a student my whole life!! And not that I am not now, its just today I feel like is the first day of the rest of my career as a clinical pharmacist. Wow. I wish my family was here to share it with me after a long day.
